Symbolism is a very important part of pysanky.  Think of it as a secret language.  You can easily wish someone happiness and long life, or I hope you have babies so I can say "You used to do that!", or I love you.  Most symbols revolve around what was important in the lives of Eastern-Europeans a couple of centuries ago - the Church, harvest and family.  And when it comes down to it, what else is really important?

I love a Big Mac but without a harvest there wouldn't be one.  And aren't ipods and Blackberrys great?  But they can't replace your family and friends.  And a religious life soothes more than the soul - it makes living worthwhile.

Here are some common symbols and their meanings.
